Is Your Cat Polydactyl?
What IS “Polydactyl?” Simply stated, it means having extra toes. The average cat has five toes on its front paws and four toes on its back paws. Anything more than that makes it polydactyl.
The most famous polydactyl cat may be Princess Six Toes, who was owned by Ernest Hemingway. Because of this, cats with extra toes are sometimes called “Hemingway Cats.” The Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Florida, is home to about 60 cats, many of whom are descended from Princess Six Toes. About half of them are polydactyl.
According to the Guinness Book Of World Records, the world record for the cat with the most toes goes to Jake, of Bonfield, Ontario, Canada. Jake has a total of 28 toes – seven on each paw. Watch out, mice!

Dear Readers,
It's hard to believe that another year has passed! I hope everyone has had a safe and happy holiday season, and congratulations to those who have added new furry friends to their families. Check out our photo page to see some happy pets with their newly adopted people, courtesy of the Almost Home Animal Rescue League. It sure is wonderful to see a happy ending to these rescue stories! Kudos to Almost Home for all their dedication, hard work, and love for these special animals!
Result from last month's poll:
Last month, we asked FurryFun readers about how they included their pets in their holiday celebrations. Here are the results!
43% give their pets extra treats during the holidays
36% wrap gifts for their pets to open
14% fill a stocking with goodies for each
of their furry buddies
7% have pets who don't celebrate holidays
Sounds like there are a lot of happy animals out there!

Over Nine Million Happy Pets
It’s anticipated that more than nine million pet owners will purchase a Valentine’s gift for their pet this year according to the “2005-2006 American Pet Product Manufacturers Association (APPMA) National Pet Owners Survey.” A tasty baked treat or exciting new toy is a great way to show your pet just how much she is appreciated.
FurryFun Wins Awards!
We are just as pleased as a pup who's learned a new trick! FurryFun has won two awards - count them - TWO! First is the "Good Dog" Site Award, awarded by I-Love-Dogs.com, (you can find the award on this page!) and also Shooter's Cool Site Award (on Spinner's page.) Thanks, everybody! We think that's really cool!
If you're looking for a cat with extra toes, check with your local shelter or rescue organization. You can find a list of available cats in your area by checking the listings at Petfinder.com .

Meet Jasmine The "Psychic" Dog!
This rescued dog may have rescued her owner! Jasmine's life nearly ended when she was just a puppy, but she was saved from euthanasia by the dedicated volunteers at Almost Home Rescue League. She was very sick, and her
legs were horribly crooked due to malnutrition. With lots of TLC, Jasmine grew strong and her legs straightened, and at last she found her forever home with Sandy of West Bloomfield, Michigan.
Jasmine is now a strong, happy dog, and just may have rescued her owner! Is Jasmine really psychic? Read Sandy's letter and decide for yourself:
Jasmine & I get up about 5:30 and walk almost every morning, and usually she's in a hurry to get ahead, but yesterday she was dawdling like crazy. We got not even 1/2 of the way we usually go, and she came to a dead stop & kept looking back toward home. While I was standing there, trying to coax her forward, we heard a crash & the sound of metal hitting and/or dragging on the ground. I shone my flashlight ahead, but couldn't see anything & Jas still wouldn't go forward, so I decided to head for home & call the police to check it out. By the time we got to the corner, I could hear someone calling for help, so hurried on home. Just as I reached our yard, we heard the sirens coming, so didn't need to call...
When I drove by there on my way to work at 7:45, the police were still there, investigating, but no cars around or anything, so wasn't sure what had happened.
Last night, when I got home, we (Jas & I) went for a walk. It looks like about 150 yards or so ahead of where she stopped in the morning, over the crest of a hill from where we were standing, a car had gone off the road, crossed the sidewalk, and went through a fence and into a stand of trees in the common area that's behind our house. One of the fence posts is 50 yards or so away in the ditch by the road, and there are car parts (headlights, etc) in among the trees.
I keep thinking that if we'd walked as we normally do instead of Jasmine stopping, the car or some of the fence pieces or car parts just might've hit us.
Sandy
Sandy, we think you've adopted your own "guardian angel" ! Thank-you for sharing your amazing story.
FurryFun will be on hand to check out the fun at Michigan's first purebred adoption event, produced by the Oakland Pet Fund and the Oakland County Animal Shelter. Did you know that almost 1/3 of all animals brought into shelters are purebreds? By adopting, instead of buying from a breeder or pet shop, you are saving a life! There will be more than adoptions, though --- there will also be demonstrations, contests, auctions, and vendors of pet supplies and services. FurryFun will be there to introduce our new Treasured Memories Photo Ornaments. As always, a portion of every FurryFun sale is donated to support no-kill shelters. Come and spend the day and join the fun! .
